We’ve Arrived!

Twelve years ago, I adopted my first dog since my childhood King, who was with me from age 7 to age 21. A Sheltie/Pom mix, King came from a big house with a little old lady and about a hundred dogs. My grandmother Hope Bassett, an attorney, had done legal work for this woman, and she couldn’t pay. Grandma accepted trade (which she did all too often, if even that – she created the term “pro bono”) for a puppy the size of a coffee pot, and the rest was history.

After King passed to the other side of the Rainbow Bridge, I went 25 years without a dog due to my work-a-holic television schedule. I loved plenty of other people’s fur-children, but never gave a thought to getting one of my own. Circumstances finally allowed me to bring another heart-stealer into my life, and Lucy Liu arrived on a lovely November day  via a double-wide trailer in Meade County. She never looked back. Lucy lives with my best friend, who developed such a strong bond that I could not bear to separate them!

Two months later, Gracie Lou arrived from the main campus of the Kentucky Humane Society, having been abandoned with her brother in the freezing January morning outside the doors. Thanks to some instant first aid, the siblings survived. Gracie came home at six weeks of age, tiny and ferocious all at the same time! She’s a 23 pound Jack Russell/Beagle who can scare the living daylights out of a full size dog, yet loves to snuggle her mommy in the chair, the couch or the bed. Gracie is deeply spiritual, having attained her Doctor of Religious Studies at the Southern Cemetery (as Brady calls it), and prays frequently for her family and strangers who appear to need her intercession with the Lord.

The following August, I came upon Brady Ramon in the Feeder’s Supply in St. Matthews, Louisville, Kentucky. He was a Gracie look-a-like, with his white body and black saddle blanket, a solid black head, and splashes of white and black ticking all over. He was a sturdy boy who was living in the tile pen with another puppy, and when I saw him, I gasped at the resemblance to Gracie! Due to the fact that I already had two dogs residing in my condo, I knew I couldn’t take him home. Two days passed and my heart gave in…Brady joined his sissies and fell in love! Now, he supposedly would grow to about twice their sizes…maybe 40 pounds. Try telling HIM that. He’s 90 and handsome and loving as a giant dog can be. He’s half giant breed, too – likely Lab/Dane – and is very gentle unless his family is threatened. Then the teeth are bared and a gutteral sound is emitted from his throat, warning off any menacing dog or human.

And the youngest member of The Puppy Pack is Wyatte Gunther. A “foster failure,” Wyatte developed a powerful relationship with Brady and Gracie, even with Lucy, and the day I was to return him to the Humane Society for adoption, I couldn’t go through with it. My neighbor Melony Lane’s grandmother Nana, who adored her newest four-legged grandson, begged me to keep him – she even sent Melony for a Feeder’s gift card to entice me to cooperate!
